The flow cytometer has been essential for the analysis of platelet structure and function in the research laboratory. Although the small physical size and biovariability of the platelet creates inherent difficulties for flow cytometric analysis, several clinical assays are performed by specialized flow cytometry laboratories. These assays will achieve more widespread practice in the near future as standardized techniques.(15.)
